While there is no cure for the common cold, you can do certain things to speed up your recovery.
Night time sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head and a fever are symptoms most of us can recall in our sleep, and they almost always mean you have a cold.
Colds, sometimes known as head colds or chest colds, are also known as upper repisratory infections, and can be caused by hundreds of different viruses. The symptoms you experience when you get a cold are actually your body's natural immune response. The truth is that by the time you actually feel like you are coming down with a cold, you have actually had it for at least a day and a half. By the time you are really feeling the symptoms of a cold, you are probably looking for a fast and effective cold remedy, or at least cold relief.
While modern science has discovered many wonderful medications and can, to a certain extent, relieve cold symptoms, a cold cure has yet to be discovered. And while genuine head cold remedies and chest cold remedies have yet to be invented, the simple self-care procedures that follow can help you feel more comfortable and can speed your recovery.
Fluids, Fluids and More Fluids
If you really want to know how to cure a cold, the first step on your self-help list must be the regular intake of fluids - specifically water. A cold can dehydrate you quickly, and you might not realize that you are not getting enough fluid. How much is enough? When you are sick, eight ounces of fluid every two hours is ideal. You goal should be light or clear urine, and thin, clear mucus. If you have yellow urine or are producing thick mucus, you should increase your intake of liquids.
Chicken Noodle Soup
Its probably one of the oldest common cold remedies known to man - Chicken Noodle Soup. Doubtless you've heard the old-wives tale that a bit of chicken noodle soup is good for a cold. For most people, Chicken Noodle Soup is pure comfort food and can lift the spirits when the world seems to be a bleak place. The truth is that your Mom was right - Chicken Noodle Soup is actually beneficial for your immune system if you have a cold. Modern science is not sure why, but chicken soup is even more effective than hot water at clearing the nasal passages and is one of the best things you can consume if you have a cold. It truly is the best food for colds.
Bed Rest is Best
It can be so tempting to pretend you aren't sick - to actively deny you need to change your routine; but if you have a cold you must take time out to rest. This means you must skip the gym and avoid your exercise routine - at least temporarily. Stay home from work or school, lest you unnecessarily spread the cold virus. Great strategies for a quick recovery include reading a book, sitting and watching TV or if you are really feeling bad - head straight for bed and sleep as much as possible.
Stay Warm
Lots of blankets, thick wool socks and a heavy shirt or PJ's will keep you warm while you relax and your body heals itself. It is so important to stay inside, stay warm and just relax while you recover. Staying warm and sedentary are two of the most important steps you can take to speed recovery.
